Aaron Washington Labs
17+ years advancing detection science, fusion energy, advanced materials, and nuclear applications — from DOE national laboratories to commercial fusion.
Core Capabilities
Eight Disciplines. One Organization.
From DOE national laboratories to commercial fusion energy, Aaron Washington Labs brings principal-scientist-level depth across eight interconnected disciplines.
Sensors & Detectors
Design and development of advanced radiation detection and sensing systems — including organic radiochromic materials, CdZnTe detectors, gamma voltaic devices, and CBRNE-class field-deployable systems. Former project manager on $5M+ sensor programs at Savannah River National Laboratory.
Polymer Science & Materials
Applied research in functional polymers, additive manufacturing, and composite materials. Led $2.9M additive manufacturing polymer programs for NNSA NA-115, including novel FDM mixing extruder development and solid-state antioxidants for radioactive environments (2 issued U.S. patents).
Nuclear & Fusion Energy
Broad nuclear science expertise spanning radiation detection, waste remediation, and commercial fusion energy. Served as Technical Project Manager at Tokamak Energy — managing DOE FPP, INFUSE, and ARPA-E programs and $10M+ in U.S. non-equity funding for fusion commercialization.
Leadership & Strategy
Executive-level technical leadership developed across DOE national labs and the private fusion sector. Directed teams of 17+ scientists and engineers, managed multimillion-dollar research portfolios, and built strategic partnerships with industry, universities, and national laboratories.
Project & Program Management
PMP-certified program manager with a track record of delivering complex, multi-disciplinary scientific programs. Managed 10+ concurrent R&D projects totaling $10M+ at SRNL, and led all U.S. non-equity funding submissions at Tokamak Energy.
Science Education & Curriculum
Adjunct professor and curriculum developer with experience teaching chemistry at USC Aiken and developing inclusive pedagogy for STEM faculty. Co-founder of AM Pathways to Success; STEAM Advisory Board member for NNSA MSIPP.
Nuclear Science & Technology
Deep technical expertise in nuclear materials, isotope identification, radiation safety, and nuclear instrumentation. Hands-on experience with SQUID magnetometry, CdZnTe detector fabrication, gamma voltaic device assembly, and nuclear waste characterization at DOE facilities including Savannah River and Hanford.
Business Development
Proven track record securing and managing federal R&D funding across DOE, DHS, NNSA, and ARPA-E programs. Led multi-state business development and utility engagement at Tokamak Energy, developed commercially viable fusion pathways, and managed $10M+ in non-equity U.S. government funding submissions.
About
Translating world-class science into mission impact.
Aaron Washington Labs is led by Dr. Aaron Lynn Washington II — a scientific executive and technology leader with over 17 years of experience at DOE national laboratories and in the private fusion energy sector. His career spans principal scientist roles at Savannah River National Laboratory, executive leadership at Tokamak Energy, and a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Florida State University. AWL brings that depth to research partnerships, program development, and science education.
Community Impact
Nonprofit & Civic Leadership
Science and engineering leadership extends beyond the lab. Dr. Washington serves on the boards of organizations dedicated to youth development, housing equity, and community advancement.
